Confirm you're eligible
21 or older, no statutory disqualifier. Worth knowing up front: 99.6% of applications are approved — 515 denials out of 110,797 since 2019.

Pass the CCARE qualification
Classroom use-of-force instruction plus a live-fire test: 50 rounds at 3, 5, 7, 10 and 15 yards. You need 40 hits. Most classes run 2–3 hours.

Applications are electronic only. $150 to your police department and $50 to the state — two separate payments, which trips up almost everyone.
Wait for the decision — 90 days
Your chief must approve or deny within 90 days of a complete application. If neither happens, the law says it is deemed approved. One 30-day extension is allowed with written notice.
